Once you arrive in Puerto Rico, you have two options to get to Culebra Island. One is by ferryboat and the other is by airplane. You might want to use the above options unless you are navigating your own private yacht or aircraft.

Ferry
To get to the ferry you may want to rent a car or use a taxi. If you rent a car, you may want to take it to Culebra on the cargo ferry ("ferry") for about $19.25 per trip (make reservations in advanced; it operates from Monday to Friday) or just lease a one-way-trip car to Fajardo (contact Leaseway 1-800-468-2647 for more details). If you rent a car and cannot take it on the ferry to Culebra (due to unforeseen reasons), you may have to leave it in Fajardo for about $10 per day in a private parking lot, until you can come back and get it. If you are driving from the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, take Road 26 and exit on Road 3 to Fajardo. Turn left on Road 194 and go southeast for 2.1 miles. Turn left on Road 195, then bear left at Fajardo Dock. Take the ferry to Culebra. The passenger ferry ("lancha") to Culebra is $2.25 each way. The locals call the people-ferry, "lancha," and the cargo-ferry, "ferry;" so be cautious when you ask for departure and arrival times. If you decide to take a taxi to Fajardo, they will charge you on the meter; check with the ground dispatchers once you arrive at the international airport. The Ferry Port Authority telephone number is (800) 981-2005 or (787) 863-0705. The following table will provide you with the ferry schedule:

Airplane
You may also take a flight from San Juan or Fajardo to Culebra. The majority of the commuters fly from the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (SJU), which is the main airport in Puerto Rico. But, some airlines also offer flights from the Isla Grande Airport (Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport) and the Fajardo Airport (Diego Jimenez Torres Airport).

Transportation in Culebra

Once you arrive in Culebra, you may use one of the transportation modes available if you decided not to ferry your vehicle or navigate your own private yacht. There are several rental car companies, public/taxi transportation ("Publicos"), bicycles and water taxies. Please be very patient during your arrival to the island (and actually during your departure too) due to the fact that the police closes the only street in town that goes to the ferry dock when the ferry arrives and departs to allow for embarking and disembarking of passengers and cargo; so the rental car staff, "publicos", or the locals may not be able to pick you up right away. It seems like mayhem, but it is a controlled mayhem. Just gather your luggage, find a spot away from the main traffic flow, phone your contact on the island to advise them of your arrival, and wait for them to get you. In the mean time, you may start your vacation exploration by visiting the gift shops, restaurants, or liquor store near the dock. The crowds are minimum at the airport, but once again you may have to wait for your arranged transportation due to the reasons explained above; make your phone call and wait. There are public phones in both places that you may use or try your cellular phone, it might work (depends on your cellular phone company). Remember that the attraction of Culebra is its relaxed atmosphere; it is timeless. Do not get bend out of shape if the services are not punctual; throw away your watch and any other high tech gadget, and recharge your soul with the island offerings and peacefulness.

If you decide to rent a car on the island, which is highly recommended, make sure that you make reservations in advanced because of the high demand for them, especially during the peak season. Ruben, from Ruben's Taxi, is our next door neighbor; so go ahead and ride with him to our condo - he knows exactly where it is. Casablanca Condominium is on this main route, so you may use this service to get to the apartment if you like; just tell the driver to drop you off by the playground. The airport is also on this main route, so you might be able to use this service to get to your destination. The same companies will offer taxi services if you call them for a different route, charges may vary.
